Wealth Disparity / Perceptual Disparity

Above image is not a clear metaphor but a design intervention on the social issue of WEALTH DISPARITY.

Intervention tries to map up perceptual difference of the economically diverse community around us. This perceptual difference develops a patchy understanding of the issue of wealth disparity.

Intervention also shows our understanding of the issue and directions which could be taken to over come or reduce wealth disparity.

Metaphor

The Meandering River

This is an attempt to visually represent the concepts and concerns surrounding juveniles. The depiction is through the course of a river- a water body. Water well suits our subject as it acquires the shape of anything that holds it, same is the case with children. A river carves a way of its own as it progresses through its course. Most rivers originate from similar sources. However, their journey is primarily governed by the environments they flow through.

A meandering river is symbolic of the eccentric emotional phenomenon that adolescents go through. Often pressures from family, peers and the society at large influence the decisions that young minds make. Thereon, they assume paths that fashion the rest of their lives. Sometimes the turmoil inside and the forces outside are too much for the child to cope with; thus either transforming him into an introvert, unconfident being, or making him a rebel of sorts.

Sensitive as adolescent minds are, they are highly susceptible to be influenced by social vices like poverty, corruption, humiliation, vengeance, domestic violence, infidelity, negligence and lack of ethics and values. These mislead them into ‘wrong’ thoughts and actions.

What happens next is a further deterrent to their ‘growth’ as responsible individuals. Once nabbed, they are subject to the measures defined by Government Policies and the Law. They are restricted within the confines of observation/ juvenile homes, which is an extremely unnatural situation for youth. Such a practice of isolation from society is not conducive for their development. The metaphor depicts how flow of a river is curbed by a man made dam…a vertical rigid structure.

The current scenario at such ‘provisions’ (sarcasm intended) is far from beneficiary. Ineffective and inadequate measures, and ill treatment meted out to the inmates does more harm to their self image than good.

In an ideal situation, the juvenile home is a center for reform and rehabilitation. Considering that transformation does happen, a question arises whether it is for good or merely a temporary change. When the water is released from a dam, it may channelize itself towards constructive pursuits and become an asset to the society. On the other hand, it is prone to flow into areas where polluting elements may contaminate it again.
